National Minority Donor Awareness Week creates awareness of the need for organ, eye, and tissue donors amongst minorities and honors those who have donated. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, minorities are three times more likely than Caucasians to suffer from end-stage renal (kidney) disease, often as the result of high blood pressure and other conditions that can damage the kidneys. While encouraging others to become organ donors, we are also encouraging the practice of good health habits. The healthier the population, the fewer transplants needed.
